Top 5 Artists to Watch in January 2019

January brings in a diverse array of fine art auctions, which includes folk art, decorative art, and furniture — along with Old Masters in New York and London. Two important events to watch out for this month are the Americana Week (January 17 to 20) and the Old Masters Week (January 29 to 31) at Christie’s and Sotheby’s.

According to Blouin Art Sales Index (BASI) the top 5 artists — whose works are expected to sell for over $1 million — are from the Old Masters Week and include Joachim Uytewael, Jan van de Capelle, Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder and Orazio Gentileschi in the order of estimated sales (high to low).

On January 30, Sotheby’s will host Joachim Uytewael’s “A Banquet of the Gods,” which is estimated to sell for between $5 million and $7 million at its Master Paintings Evening Sale in New York. On January 31, Christie’s has one lot on offer — “The Baptism of Christ,” which is expected to sell for between $15,000 and $20,000 at its Old Master & British Drawings auction in New York.

Jan van de Capelle was one of the leading marine painters of 17th century Holland. He is the Dutch Golden Age painter of seascapes and winter landscapes. This month, Sotheby’s New York is featuring one of his artworks, “A Shipping Scene on a Calm Sea, With a Number of Vessels and Figures, and a Jetty on the Left,” estimated to sell for between $4 million and $6 million at its Master Paintings Evening Sale on January 30 in New York.

Sotheby’s New York will feature Sir Peter Paul Rubens’ work “Nude Study Of A Young Man With Raised Arms.” Other Rubens-linked works include “St. Michael Slaying The Dragon, After Rubens’ Woman Of The Apocalypse,” attributed to the School of Sir Peter Paul Rubens and “The Triumph Of Silenus,” attributed to the Circle of Sir Peter Paul Rubens at its Old Master Drawings sale on January 30. Christie’s Old Master Prints January 29 has two of his works —“Saint Catherine” and “The Temptation of Christ By the Devil”— on sale in New York.

Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder’s “A Still Life of Flowers in a Glass Flask on a Marble Ledge, Flanked By a Red Admiral Butterfly and a Lizard” is the only lot featuring in Sotheby’s New York Master Paintings Evening Sale January 30. It is estimated to sell for between $2.5 million and $3.5 million.

On January 30, Sotheby’s will feature Orazio Gentileschi’s work “The Fall of the Rebel Angels,” which is expected to sell for between $2,500,000 and $3,500,000 at the Master Paintings Evening Sale in New York.
