Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale Bags £10 Million

Phillips recorded a total sale of £10 million in the auction — 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale — that took place on March 8, 2019, in London.

The head of 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale Tamila Kerimova said, “The middle market remains a vibrant area for collectors across the globe, with bidders from fifty countries across six continents competing for works by emerging and established artists alike. George Condo’s ‘Untitled’ led the sale, more-than-tripling its low estimate, and works by Daniel Buren, Gunther Forg, Dana Schutz, and Lee Ufan saw a great depth of bidding. We are proud to have delivered a strong season in London this spring, and look forward to the New York and Hong Kong sales in May.”

The top 10 lots at the sale included George Condo’s “Untitled” (1997) that was sold for a price way more than its estimated value. While the painting’s estimated worth was £150,000 - £200,000, it was sold at £543,000. As the auction house stated in the press release, “Condo came up in the New York art world at a time when art favored brazen innuendo and shock. Student to Warhol, best friend to Basquiat, and collaborator with William S. Burroughs, Condo tracked a different path. He was drawn to the endless inquiries posed by the aesthetics and formal considerations of Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and the Old Masters.”

Some of the top sales at Phillips’ 20th Century & Contemporary Art Day Sale included Sean Scully’s “Dust,” (1984) that was sold for £471,000 within its estimate range of £400,000 - £600,000; Dana Schutz’s “Romance,” (2006) that was sold at £471,000, higher than its estimated price of £150,000 - £250,000; Gunther Forg’s “Untitled,” (1988) for £411,000, against its estimated worth of £120,000 - £180,000; Marc Chagall’s “Le violoncelliste,” (1964) for £375,000, while the pre-auction value of this artwork was £200,000 - £300,000; Rudolf Stingel’s “Untitled,” (2009) for £350,000, whose pre-auction estimate was £250,000 - £350,000; and KAWS’s “Untitled (MBFG 7),” (2014) for £325,000, higher than its pre-auction estimate of £200,000 - £300,000.
