Galerie Michael Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Marc Chagall

A highly anticipated exhibit by Marc Chagall will be on view at Galerie Michael. It features works on public display for the first time in history — and not seen by anyone in more than 40 years. The exhibit will be on view from September 15 through October 31, 2018. About 40 works will be on display and, unlike traditional museum exhibits, the rare pieces will be for sale.

“We are very excited to have acquired these works from a vault of the famed French printmaker and Chagall’s artistic partner and collaborator, Charles Sorlier,” says Richard P. van Pelt, General Manager of Galerie Michael, adding: “The works are astonishing not only for their exceptionally vibrant colors, but also for the notations by the artist’s hand.”

The gallery adds, “As one of the most recognized Modern Masters in fine art, project an expansive repertory of imagery from the whimsical scenes of Russian folk art to dreamlike worlds described in literature, Chagall’s use of color and form is distinctive —derived partly from Russian Expressionists with strong influences from French Cubism, suffused with exquisite, poetic inspiration.”

Galerie Michael has acquired numerous, virtually unobtainable trial proofs, color proofs and bon à tirers directly from the publisher. The displayed works are not only rare works but saturated with the rich colors of Chagall’s paintbrush, with countless hand annotations in pencil.

“Comprised of 42 color lithographs, these works transport the viewer not only into the heart of the story, but into the mind of Marc Chagall. His enduring fascination with romantic narratives is typical of the vibrant, dream-like scenes for which he is most famous. Considered by many to be his most important graphic series, ‘Daphnis and Chloé’s’ unrestricted use of color combined with Romantic Symbolism establishes this magnificent set of lithographs as a supreme artistic achievement by Chagall at the height of his powers,” the gallery adds.
