François Boucher’s Painting Under the Hammer at Artcurial’s Upcoming Paris Auction

François Boucher’s painting, “The meal of the barnyard,” will be featured at Artcurial’s upcoming auction, “Old Masters & 19th Century Art.” The painting has one of the highest estimates at the sale, of around €200,000 - €300,000 and it will be offered in lot 344 at the auction. The sale will be held on March 27, 2019, in Paris.

“The meal of the barnyard,” is an oil painting on canvas and it is signed and dated ‘f. Boucher 1769’ at the bottom center. The press release mentions the entire provenance of this painting as it passed to several owners, including Collection Panchet; Jacques-Nicolas Brunot; Collection of Lord Hillingdon, London; The Hallsborough Gallery, London; Collection M. Krikor A. Bergamali, Montevideo; Jean Chaquiriand Collection, France; Private collection, Germany; Richard Green, London; and subsequently reaching the present owners in 2014.

“This girl giving her hens the grain in her apron is a wonderful example of this vocabulary put in place by François Boucher. Dated in the last years of his career, it illustrates the resumption of a theme that has been dear to him and that it has declined in several versions. A first painting dated 1752 and engraved several times under the title of ‘La petite fermière’ then ‘La petite ménagère’ presents in a format in width the same subject of a little girl giving grain to hens. This is perhaps the table mentioned in the catalog of the so-called Madame du Barry sale of 1777: ‘A little girl who throws grain at chickens and chickens near a cottage,’” states the auction house.

Commenting on Boucher’s art style, the release states, “François Boucher is one of those artists who knew an immense reputation in their lifetime. His name is still inseparable from the idea of ??an aesthetic associated with the reign of Louis XV and the taste of Madame de Pompadour, that of a light, cheerful, often tinged voluptuous vision of the world, in landscapes with fresh colors, all served by a generous touch releasing a powerful seduction.”
