Elmgreen & Dragset Installations at Perrotin, Paris

A solo exhibition by Elmgreen & Dragset featuring a series of installations are on view at Perrotin through December 22, 2018. The exhibition marks the artists’ first solo show in Paris since they mounted a one-day installation at the Grand Palais in the fall of 2016.

Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset have worked together as an artist duo since 1995 creating work that explores the relationship between art, architecture and design. Based in Berlin, they are known for work that has wit and subversive humour, and also address social and cultural concerns.

Elmgreen & Dragset push against the normal modes for the display of art, in their preoccupation with objects and their settings, and the discourse that can arise when those objects are radically recontextualized. With works full of performativity and participation, their art invites as well as equally denies participation. For instance, pools are emptied, diving boards are oriented vertically, bars are inaccessible and sinks are dysfunctional. Minimalist aesthetics challenge the sterilizing force of the white cube with quotidian objects being stripped of their utility and regarded as sculptural phenomena.

Similarly, Elmgreen & Dragset’s outdoor public sculpture recontextualize the surroundings in which they are located, such as well-known projects like Van Gogh’s Ear at Rockefeller Plaza in New York or Prada Marfa along Highway 90 in the middle of the Texan desert.

The artists were nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize in 2000, and in 2002 they won the Preis der Nationalgalerie at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. They were awarded the Arken Art Prize in 2006 and in 2009, they were awarded Special Mention at the Venice Biennale for “The Collectors,” which was their highly elaborate exhibition for the Danish and Nordic Pavilions. For the same exhibition, also in 2009, they were awarded the Kritikerlaget/Norwegian Critics’ Association Kunstkritikerprisen/Art Critics’ Prize. In 2012, they won an Eckersberg Medal. In 2015, they were awarded an honorary doctorate at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Since it was found in 1989, Perrotin Gallery has been dedicated to offering an increasingly vibrant and creative environment to experience artists’ work. The gallery has worked closely with his roster of artists, some for more than 25 years, to help fulfill their ambitious dreams and projects. Perrotin participates in all the significant worldwide art fairs each year including: Art Basel (Hong Kong, Miami, Basel), Frieze (London, New York), FIAC (Paris), Dallas Art Fair, Art Cologne, Art Stage Jakarta, Expo Chicago, Art021 & West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai, Zona Maco Mexico, among others.
