“Crystal Twist” Lamps by Studio Floris Wubben

Studio Floris Wubben has collaborated with Baars & Bloemhoff to design and develop the “Crystal Twist” collection using HI-MACS acrylic stone.

Studio Floris Wubben says, “Acrylic stone is a combination of minerals and acrylate that is normally used for the production of sleek surfaces. Floris Wubben used it to produce lamps with a raw and organic character. During the design process he discovered that the material can be torn apart when it is heated. This brings the hidden core to the surface. ‘Crystal Twist’ involves fracturing two long strands of acrylic stone and intertwining them. This is achieved with a self-constructed tool that stretches the material around a mould. Superimposing different strands generates interplay of structure and color.”

Founded in 2009, Studio Floris Wubben is located in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Works by the studio are sold in galleries and shops in The Netherlands and abroad. Most of these objects are part of collections and exhibited in museums like the Design Museum Holon (Israel), MAD (New York), Gewerbe (Winterthur), Mint Museum of Craft and Design (Charlotte), the Noordbrabants museum (Den Bosch), and the Museum of Arts and Design (Singapore).

Over the past few years the studio has focused increasingly on the design of machines and processes. In the last three projects — “Pressed Project”, “Hammered Bowls”, and the “Globe Project” — the self-designed machines formed an important part of the creative process. The low-tech machinery manufactures serially unique objects. It is a combination of use of natural materials such as ceramics, and the influence of the designer on the making process ensure the characteristic shapes.

For their classic “globe lamps” the studio said: “The sun is not just the source of all energy and life on planet earth; it also ensures that planets keep revolving on their orbital path. The positions of the axes influence the properties of each unique planet. The sun — this gigantic and influential designer — is the source of inspiration for the ‘Globe Project.’”
