Auguste Rodin Among the Top Sculptors of 2018

The three-dimensional visual art form that is created by one of the four elementary processes: carving, modeling, casting and constructing held a very significant place in all cultures and especially in religious devotion.

During the late 19th and 20th century, sculpture artists redefined and reworked the very concept of the art form. The materials used in sculpture have changed throughout history and are now very diverse. With Modernism, classic durable materials like stone and metal, especially bronze gave way to the use of different materials therefore giving artists much more freedom.

Moving away from traditional process, modernist sculpture took inspiration from Impressionism and concentrated on personal expression, stylization and surface texture rather than working on perfect structure, details and storytelling.

French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is recognized as the precursor of Modern sculpture.  He is known as the artist who incorporated sculpture into Impressionism.

Initially, Rodin worked for a number of sculptors with not much success of his own. In 1880, he was employed at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres porcelain factory and during this time, he began exhibiting at the Paris Salon, the official exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This led to a meeting with Edmund Turquet, who worked at the Ministry of Fine Arts, which was a turning point. Through Turquet he was commissioned to make “The Gates of Hell,” which he worked on for 40 years before leaving it unfinished. “The Thinker,” one of Rodin’s best-known works, resulted from this project.

Moving away from traditional themes of mythology, Rodin created the human body with realism, embracing the individual character and its physicality. Working primarily in bronze, Rodin’s characteristic works express an unmistakable modernity and dramatic naturalism that have attracted the collectors over the years. His works “Baiser, moyen modele dit ‘Taille de la Porte’ — modele avec base simplifiee” and “Le Penseur, taille de la porte dit ‘moyen modele’” have fetched over $8 million each at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening sale in 2018.
