“Art on Paper 2019: The 45th Exhibition” at Weatherspoon Art Museum

“Art on Paper 2019: The 45th Exhibition” at Weatherspoon Art Museum

From February 3 through May 5, 2019, “Art on Paper 2019: The 45th Exhibition” will be on view at the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, North Carolina. This will be the museum’s 45th edition of the annual show.

The first “Art on Paper” was held in 1965 and has charted a history of Contemporary art through outstanding works on paper in the past 45 years. The exhibition celebrates Contemporary art in which the use of paper — either as surface or material — is a primary concern.

“Art on Paper,” the museum says, “offers community members the exciting opportunity to purchase art, as all works in the show are for sale. Proceeds go directly to the artists and their galleries. The Dillard Fund and ‘xpedx’ have provided long-standing support for the Weatherspoon to acquire selections from each ‘Art on Paper’ exhibition for The Dillard Collection of Art on Paper, which now numbers over 570 examples.”

On display will be works by noteworthy and established artists such as Robert Smithson, Howardena Pindell, Joseph Stella, Louise Bourgeois, and Lee Krasner. Works by contemporary artists Diana al-Hadid, Amy Cutler, Rosemarie Fiore, Toyin Ojih Odutola, and Saya Woolfalk are also part of the collection.

Elaine D. Gustafson, Curator of Collections at the Weatherspoon, is organizing the exhibition. It will take place at the museum’s The Bob & Lissa Shelley McDowell Gallery.

Founded in 1941 by Gregory Ivy, first head of the Art Department at Woman’s College (now UNCG), the Weatherspoon Art Museum has grown from a university teaching gallery to a fully professional museum that is nationally recognized for its excellent collections and dynamic exhibition program.
