Analytical Insights — “Made in Britain” at Sotheby’s London

“Made in Britain” auction is scheduled for September 18, 2018 at Sotheby’s London. It will feature a selection of British paintings, drawings, works on paper, prints, photography and watercolors, contemporary and studio ceramics and design. The exhibition offers the opportunity to acquire works by some of the century’s most celebrated and sought-after artists and makers.

“The sale will feature major and important works by the likes of Edward Burra, Ivon Hitchens, Nic Fiddian-Green, Richard Hamilton, DuncanGrant, and Sir Terry Frost,” writes Blouin Artinfo. “The total sales realized from the “Made in Britain” at Sotheby’s London last year was £2.5 million (including buyer’s premium) with 290 lots. This year, the auction is expected to realize between £1.5 million and £2.5 million, with 215 works of 134 artists on offer.”

The analytics reveal that the same auction took place at Sotheby’s London in September of 2015, 2016 and 2017, and total sales realized were £2.1 million, £2 million and £2.5 million, respectively. For 2018, the sales are expected to cross last year’s mark. “Dame Lucie Rie was the top artist of the 2017 sale, realizing a total sale of £295 million with 12 lots,” adds Blouin Artinfo.

Chris Levine’s “Lightness Of Being (Pink)” is expected to be one of the top-selling artworks of this auction and is estimated to sell for £70,000 to £100,000. Nic Fiddian-Green’s “Horse At Water XV” is expected to sell for £60,000 to £80,000. “Spring Evening From A Roof” by Ivon Hitchens is estimated to sell for £40,000 to £60,000. Dame Lucie Rie has the most artworks in this sale with 12, followed by Richard Hamilton’s seven works. Of the 215 works on offer, 151 are offered in the low-estimated price band of £1,000 to £10,000. There are about 31 lots (23 artists) in this auction that are expected to sell in the price range of £10,000 to £100,000.
